Public Services Assistant

Public Services Assistant

Public Services Assistant

University Libraries serve patrons of all types, like students, faculty, staff, and the Kent community. Students in these positions could work with the public by answering questions, finding and using library resources, helping patrons with their account, and completing other desk duties. Students working in public service should be positive, friendly, and adaptable to challenges. Some work locations for Public Service assistants are:

Student Multimedia Studio – the SMS can be found on the first floor of the University Library building. They act as a makerspace for library patrons to learn about and use all sorts of technology. Some of the resources found in the SMS include but are not limited to 3D printing, a podcasting studio, and Adobe Creative Cloud. Student employees in the SMS teach and empower all users to use the technology and resources available.

Library Services Desk at the University Library Building - The students in this area are the first friendly faces a patron will see when they walk through the library doors. These students answer questions, process library materials, help patrons find resources, and keep the library clean and functioning.

Branch Libraries – While the resources are focused on particular subject areas, students do not need experience in those fields! The students at the branch libraries do a little bit of everything!  The student employees in branch libraries could be working with the public and doing “back of house” tasks like shelving books and processing holds. These students work in other buildings across campus.
