Chuck Ayers earned a degree in graphic design from Kent State University in 1971. As a student, he illustrated cartoons for the Daily Kent Stater and the Akron Beacon Journal, where he later became editorial cartoonist. In 1986, he received a first-place award for editorial cartoons from the Ohio Associated Press. Ayers collaborated with Tom Batiuk to create the popular comic strip, "Crankshaft," which debuted in 1987. In 2000, Ayers and Batiuk created a "Crankshaft" Comic Strip Thirtieth Anniversary Story Arc about the May 4, 1970 shootings, the originals of which are now part of the May 4 Collection, housed in Kent State’s Special Collections and Archives. He has been an instructor of cartooning at Kent State and The University of Akron.
