History of College of Nursing
In September of 1965, arrangements were made for students in nursing programs at St. Luke's and Mt. Sinai of Cleveland to spend their freshman year in residence at Kent State University. A year later, the Ohio Board of Regents granted Kent State University approval to create a baccalaureate degree program in nursing. On November 15, 1967, the Ohio State Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration also granted approval for the School of Nursing at KSU. In 1971 a full 8-year accreditation was issued and by September of 1977 the first graduate students were admitted. The graduate program allowed students to specialize in areas of Nursing of the Adult, Parent-Child Nursing and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. The School of Nursing was originally located in Bowman Hall and various temporary facilities as it expanded. By September 1978 the School of Nursing was moved into a new building which was renamed in 1985 after Linnea E. Henderson, the founding dean for the School of Nursing. On September 9, 1999, KSU's School of Nursing was granted college status which was quickly followed by the development of a joint PhD program with the University of Akron.
